I grew up in castle rock, co. Just outside of town is castlewood canyon state park. There is an old dam there that broke years ago, I don't think anyone died but it was the reason why denver built the cherry creek dam

Before the PRR and the the Horseshoe Curve were built canals and the Portage Railroad were used to move goods. The canals required water reservoirs to maintain the water level. Once the railroad came through those reservoirs.. artificial lakes, were no longer needed and were abandoned. One of those lakes, Lake Conemaugh, was sold to the West Fork Hunting and Fishing Club,. The club had the dam repaired but did a poor job of it. Then the rains came and the dam failed, causing the Johnstown Flood of 1889, killing over 2200 people.

This video just jogged my memory. My dad was born and raised in Altoona, PA. One time, when I was a teenager, and we were camping nearby, my dad took me to see his hometown, which also included a trip to Horseshoe Curve. He told me how, when he was also a teenager, he joined a volunteer foot patrol of that famous railroad curve, where he was instructed to report anything or anyone suspicious along the curve, since they were already very much aware that the Germans had plans to disrupt & cripple that vital stretch of rail line. After Pearl Harbor, he lied about his age, joined the Marines, and was shipped to the South Pacific, where he was thrust into some of the bloodiest of all battles.

Live here in Altoona. The Horseshoe curve is revered here. It's even been the central reason the AAA baseball team here is called The Curve
